It has the largest concentration of manatees in the United States, so you're nearly guaranteed to spot them on your trip. We run tours in the rain or shine, and find that a little bit of rain actually helps deter recreational people, often giving us an even greater likelihood of a private experience with the manatees. If there are heavy winds or lightning–dangerous weather–then we may wait out the weather, or give a full refund if we are unable to go out. Manatees are awesome, but not worth risking dangerous weather patterns.

Do we run tours in the rain?

Absolutely! We are lucky enough to be able to run successful manatee swim tours year-round. We have a resident population of manatees of likely three to four dozen wild manatees that stay in our bay year-round. During the warmer months, the manatees do tend to spread out more, and we may find them anywhere in our 600-acre bay.

Are there still manatees after manatee season?

If you are looking for sheer numbers of manatees then it is a direct correlation, the colder that the weather has been, the more manatees aggregate in our Bay to stay warm around the numerous freshwater springs throughout King’s Bay. Typically during “Manatee Season” (Nov 15-March 31) we have the most manatees that we will have over the course of the year. However, the manatees move with the weather patterns and if we experience a stretch of warm weather, many will head back out into the Gulf, even during the winter. Since we do have the resident population of manatees, some of our favorite times to swim with them are when travelers are not as prevalent, such as the months of May and September and October!

When is the best time to see manatees?

You certainly do not need to be a habitual diver or Michael Phelps to have a great time snorkeling with manatees. We definitely recommend being comfortable and able to stay calm while having your face in the water. We teach many novice snorkelers how to snorkel and get up-close to wildlife without disturbing the animals. We provide flotation devices and have an in-water guide dedicated to helping the less comfortable guests get acclimated to our waterways. Even so, basic swimming ability is highly recommended to keep the protected wildlife and guests alike safe.

Do we need to be great swimmers to swim with Manatees?

Only dangerously cute! Manatees have no natural aggression, and honestly, any pet that you have ever owned is more likely to hurt you than a manatee. We have never seen aggressive behavior towards swimmers, not even with mothers and calves!

Only dangerously cute! Manatees have no natural aggression, and honestly, any pet that you have ever owned is more likely to hurt you than a manatee. We have never seen aggressive behavior towards swimmers, not even with mothers and calves!

Is the water cold?

King’s Bay stays right around 72° Fahrenheit (22°C) year-round, due to the magnitude of Freshwater Springs around the bay that produce hundreds of millions of gallons daily. For some, this is quite comfortable; for others, it is pretty cold. To help keep guests warm in the water, we provide wetsuits which makes guests stay warm over prolonged periods. If it is a cold day, we also provide hot chocolate to help take the edge off after getting out of the water!

Is there an Admission fee to Pete's Pier?

Yes, Pete's Pier charges $5 per guest at the marina. We have included this into your tour price so that you will not have to pay on arrival.

Private Scalloping Adventure

Sales Pitch

This private snorkeling adventure is appropriate for up to 6 passengers! Perfect for families, everybody will enjoy this “underwater Easter Egg hunt.” Our local Master Captains will take you a few miles offshore to the scalloping grounds. We equip guests with all the necessary snorkeling gear–we also include bottled water on the boat. Once you arrive on the scalloping grounds, dive in and search the nearby waters for the elusive and delicious Bay Scallop!

We usually find scallops between 5-10 feet of water so confident swimmers usually find more scallops. Prior snorkeling experience is beneficial but not necessary. The legal scalloping limit is 2 gallons of whole bay scallops in-shell per person or 10 gallons per boat, whichever happens first. If you would like additional help trying to catch your limit, feel free to add an in-water guide who will help teach you how to hunt for scallops and help collect them for your group. I wanted to take my nieces and nephew to do a true florida adventure and this did not disappoint. It was the groups favorite part of the trip. We were not entirely sure what to expect and it was a little overwhelming looking into all of the different options for a semi-private manatee tour. However, as soon as we got to the gift shop we knew we picked the right place. It was a relaxed and smooth transition from the shop to the bus and everyone was patient with our 11 year old. Reid and Jake were the ideal tour guide and captain combo. They had great chemistry and were not overbearing. They were able to enthusiastically match the chemistry of our group. Absolutely amazing experience! Reid/Evan/the gentleman driving us around in the boat were all so kind and knowledgeable. I searched the internet for snorkeling tours in the Crystal River area. Their web site gave me a feeling they would be a good match to what I was looking for. Because I was staying about ten miles away and my schedule was open, I thought it would be best to visit them before I booked. The people I delt with were friendly, honest, and genuinely interested in my satisfaction. I walked into their office to meet them and confirm they offered a tour suitable for me. I had both knees replaced in the last 6 months and so I was especially concerned about getting in and out of the boat. They took time to explain how the tours are done, how the boat ladders were strong and enter the water deep enough to make getting in and out easy enough for me. I booked for the following day and was satisfied with the entire experience. Only thing I would like to change is the clarity of the water where the manatees' graze. Obviously, that is out of their control and will be improving after more of the sea grass recovers from recent hurricane damage. After we had our fill of watching a couple manatees, they took us to one of the springs that is the source of the water in the harbor. It was amazingly clear! Our guide took pictures throughout the tour, then emailed us a link to the pictures. There was no additional cost for the pictures, and they are nice to share with our friends. Their boat was clean and simple - not like some of the other tours whose boats looked like floating billboards.I can definitely recommend them if you are looking for a personable tour.

A unique experience that was enjoyed by all members of our party, from 9 year olds to 50 years olds. The price was extremely competitive, it even included loads of brilliant photos of us on the boat, in the water and with the manatee. The duration was about right for the experience and the tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable and respectful of the manatees and their habitat. I'm so glad I chose this tour as it can be a bit of a gamble choosing tour operators online, especially when they are selling pretty much the same thing but at vastly differing prices.

Swimming with manatees was on my bucket list, this was such a great experience. Even though "manatee season" was over Captain Jake and our guide Trent were able to find two separate opportunities to swim with them. On the way back there was a once in a lifetime experience of watching a bald eagle having a midair battle with two osprey! I highly recommend this group because they're very knowledgeable, were concerned about not disturbing the manatees and incredibly funny.

We took the early tour swimming/snorkeling with Manatees with guide Hudson and Captain Brody and it was so worth it!Everything included and gear provided and free photos means you really don't have to worry about anything and can just enjoy the experience.Team very friendly and patient and explaining everything extremely well, they really wanted us to have the best experience and what was noticeable is how Hudson himself- although swimming with Manatees all the time- was still excited about each Manatee sighting and interaction himself and eager to share his love for these animals with his customers.They also took us to swim in a small spring nearby, where we encountered a mum Manatee with a baby, which was incredible. This was such an amazing experience. We went early in the morning and lucked out with no one else having booked, so we were able to go at our own pace. It was a very fun, easygoing, and safe environment. Kaya was extremely personable and it was very clear she knew what she was doing and loved what she was doing. She found a mother and baby that we were able to spend most of our time with. Jake, the Captain, had a wealth of knowledge about manatees, the other wildlife in the area, and the area and river in general. He knew the perfect spots to look for manatees and kept the ride entertaining. I definitely felt that I got my money's worth and even more. I also appreciated the photos Kaya took so I could enjoy the experience while in the water and have keepsake memories. I plan on doing another manatee tour next time I am in Florida, and I will definitely be booking with Nature's Discovery again for it. It's a small company and you can tell they care about their customers getting the best experiences.

Had a really awesome time out on the water.
