About - Nature's Discovery Manatee Tours
About
Mission
We founded Nature’s Discovery after years of experience swimming with manatees in Crystal River, Florida. Snorkeling with manatees is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most people who visit the Nature Coast. We have spent years in this business professionally, and even longer as excited visitors to this amazing place getting close to the one-of-a-kind west indian manatee. Coming face-to-face with a manatee is a transcendent experience for many people. Some describe it as spiritual and others may have no words to describe their manatee encounter, but their face tells the whole story. Manatees are large animals—often larger than your sofa at home—but they are such docile animals that people who never had the experience of a snorkeling tour or approaching wildlife can be comfortable around their gentle demeanor. Even after years of living around the animals, it is clear when you are snorkeling in the King’s Bay Manatee Refuge, you are truly entering the manatee’s home. People from all over the world have come to Crystal River seeking wonder, beauty, and up close experiences with these truly gentle giants. Our foundation of Nature’s Discovery rose out of a desire to help as many people as we can meet the Florida manatee in an educational and exciting setting that preserves the ecology of King’s Bay without taking any expense on the manatees themselves. We preach passive observation of these beautiful animals so that we may snorkel with manatees without disturbing their behavior. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience, getting in the water with wild manatees is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Florida and it is our absolute privilege and pleasure to give you the adventure of a lifetime!

FAQs
What should I bring?
Bring a swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen. Hats and sunglasses are advisable. Bring sweaters or jackets to help you warm up when you get out of the water.
Is prior snorkeling experience required?
No, beginners are welcome.
Are private tours available?
Yes, private tours can be arranged.
How do I get the photos?
We send all photos digitally after the tour!
Are the tours suitable for children?
Yes, our tours are family-friendly and suitable for children. Please contact us for specific age recommendations.
How do I book a tour?
You can book your tour directly through our website or contact us here (352) 212-5181 for assistance.
Do we run tours in the rain?
Absolutely! We run tours in the rain or shine, and find that a little bit of rain actually helps deter recreational people, often giving us an even greater likelihood of a private experience with the manatees. If there are heavy winds or lightning–dangerous weather–then we may wait out the weather, or give a full refund if we are unable to go out. Manatees are awesome, but not worth risking dangerous weather patterns.
Are there still manatees after manatee season?
Absolutely! We are lucky enough to be able to run successful manatee swim tours year-round. We have a resident population of manatees of likely three to four dozen wild manatees that stay in our bay year-round. During the warmer months, the manatees do tend to spread out more, and we may find them anywhere in our 600-acre bay.
Do we need to be great swimmers to swim with Manatees?
You certainly do not need to be a habitual diver or Michael Phelps to have a great time snorkeling with manatees. We definitely recommend being comfortable and able to stay calm while having your face in the water. We teach many novice snorkelers how to snorkel and get up-close to wildlife without disturbing the animals. We provide flotation devices and have an in-water guide dedicated to helping the less comfortable guests get acclimated to our waterways. Even so, basic swimming ability is highly recommended to keep the protected wildlife and guests alike safe.
Are manatees dangerous?
Only dangerously cute! Manatees have no natural aggression, and honestly, any pet that you have ever owned is more likely to hurt you than a manatee. We have never seen aggressive behavior towards swimmers, not even with mothers and calves!
Is the water cold?
King’s Bay stays right around 72° Fahrenheit (22°C) year-round, due to the magnitude of Freshwater Springs around the bay that produce hundreds of millions of gallons daily. For some, this is quite comfortable; for others, it is pretty cold. To help keep guests warm in the water, we provide wetsuits which makes guests stay warm over prolonged periods. If it is a cold day, we also provide hot chocolate to help take the edge off after getting out of the water!
Is there an Admission fee to Pete's Pier?
There is a $5 fee per guest going to Pete's Pier Marina. That $5 charge is included into the cost of your booking so you won't have to pay on arrival.

During the warmer months, the manatees do tend to spread out more, and we may find them anywhere in our 600-acre bay.
When is the best time to see manatees?
If you are looking for sheer numbers of manatees then it is a direct correlation, the colder that the weather has been, the more manatees aggregate in our Bay to stay warm around the numerous freshwater springs throughout King’s Bay. Typically during “Manatee Season” (Nov 15-March 31) we have the most manatees that we will have over the course of the year. However, the manatees move with the weather patterns and if we experience a stretch of warm weather, many will head back out into the Gulf, even during the winter. Since we do have the resident population of manatees, some of our favorite times to swim with them are when travelers are not as prevalent, such as the months of May and September and October!

Whether you're a seasoned scalloper or a first-time visitor, our charters promise an unforgettable experience that combines fun with education on sustainable seafood practices.Sales Pitch
This private snorkeling adventure is appropriate for up to 6 passengers! Perfect for families, everybody will enjoy this “underwater Easter Egg hunt.” Our local Master Captains will take you a few miles offshore to the scalloping grounds. We equip guests with all the necessary snorkeling gear–we also include bottled water on the boat. Once you arrive on the scalloping grounds, dive in and search the nearby waters for the elusive and delicious Bay Scallop!
We usually find scallops between 5-10 feet of water so confident swimmers usually find more scallops. Prior snorkeling experience is beneficial but not necessary. The legal scalloping limit is 2 gallons of whole bay scallops in-shell per person or 10 gallons per boat, whichever happens first. If you would like additional help trying to catch your limit, feel free to add an in-water guide who will help teach you how to hunt for scallops and help collect them for your group. If you would like to learn a little more, check out our blog!

What do people say about Nature's Discovery?
Kaya and Evan were wonderful. Using a drone to quickly find manatees, we were able to watch early morning feeding immediately and for the entire time snorkeling. And they provided great photos to remember the adventure. Thank you for a fabulous experience.

5 stars from start to finish - wonderful experience. Hudson and Captain Jake were knowledgeable, patient and fun. We swam with one massive manatee for about an hour - he was so chill and SO CUTE. I'd like to go back in the winter to see more :) Highly recommend!

What an incredible time, swimming with manatees in Crystal River. Thanks Nature's Discovery, Steve and Evan for a fantastic experience!

We saw a family in the Everglades with one of their shirts, so we decided to ask how they liked Natures Discovery. This family spoke very highly of Natures Discovery, so we tried them and were not disappointed at all. They put us on 2 manatees right away and we spent the rest of the time with those 2. Hudson took a ton of pictures that they send to you right away when the tour is over. I would certainly use them again.

This tour was awesome, our tour guide Mya and the boat captain Evan were outstanding. They did not rush the experience, and let the small group of us decide when we had enough. The facilities were clean and spacious for a smaller operation. They were full of both manatee and local information. Definitely worth it!!

Evan and Mya were fantastic guides! Great experience! Memories to last forever. Manatees, Fish, Birds, Springs, hot chocolate on a cool morning, great videos/pictures, and on and on. Highly recommend.

We swam up close with the manatee. There was heavy rain the night before and the water was murky, but we saw several manatees and they swam right past us.

Hudson was a great guide! We saw so many manatee and were thrilled to swim within their peaceful world. Gentle giants of the sea!

My husband and I did the semi-private tour on February 14,2026. We had Caleb as a guide and John as a boat captain. Both of these men were fabulous! Caleb took great care of us in the water and captured pictures of us with manatees! My husband has bad eyesight so they told me ahead of time that we could get prescription goggles through Amazon which we did and they worked great! Just FYI we are both 63 years old and have never snorkeled, but we did great with their encouragement and instruction. I have a balance disorder so was apprehensive, but if you put your mind to it you can do it! We highly recommend this company!

We had a group of 12 and were looking for a manatee tour company that could accommodate all of us on one boat. I found Natures Discovery and they provided us with a private boat at a great price. Captain Jake and our guide Jayden were fantastic. Jake put us on hundreds of manatees and Jayden is a manatee magnet. They were attracted to him for some reason. We all got a very close up experience with him and some followed him around like pets. One huge one loved Jake's boat ladder and stayed there like he didn't want us to leave. It was a trip of a lifetime for all of us. We can't wait to go back and go scalloping with them this summer. Thanks Jake and Jayden you're the best.

came here for my birthday because i've seen videos of people swimming/kayaking with manatees. this is one of the few tours where you dont' have to pay to park at the pier. you park at their shop and they take you to the pier (very short ride away). they provide the wetsuit, snorkel, water and noodle to float. the staff (stephen) were very sweet and friendly-they even take pictures of the manatees for you. we were able to see 3+ manatees during our trip - all very unique and different. it was very cool seeing them in their environment and to see them up close. i do wish we were able to stay out longer (3 hour tour but only stayed in the water roughly about 1-1.5 hours) but it was a bit chilly in the water (70's where it was 80's outside). overall, highly recommend! the store has cute souvenirs as well if you were interested!

This was our second tour with Nature's Discovery, as my husband and I swam with the manatees last February with them. We came back and brought our 9 and 11 yo last weekend! They had wetsuits to fit everyone. Mandy was a great guide and even kept a watch over my eldest when we went back to the boat. My youngest froze out early (30 outside, so no shame in that) and the boat captain welcomed her back with hot cocoa so I could return to the manatees. It was safe and fun and the van was waiting with full heat on blast when we got back. Highly recommend!

If I could give 100 stars I would. Truly the best animal encounter I've ever had in my life... and I've been on Safari in Kenya! Maya and Evan were incredible; It was clear they truly cared for the manatees and respected the environment. If you're looking for a family owned business, smaller personalized groups, and people who care about the wellbeing of these docile creatures, this is the place.

Guide Steven and Captain Jake were great. My daughter and I had a fantastic time and saw A LOT of manatees.

We went in mid December and you couldn't believe the amount of manatees that we were able to see. Safe area to go swimming in. Caleb, Jake, and team were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous. Seeing the manatees was absolutely breath taking and we learned many interesting facts about them. Also saw many other types of wildlife while on the tour, including birds, fish, and turtles. Would definitely recommend and would absolutely do again. Worth every penny!

This trip was absolute best! Taylor and John were ultimate professional. We lucked out because weather was beautiful and we spotted mom and baby manatees right away. We swam with them until we got so tired. We even saw the cow nursing her calf. It was amazing!!!!! Taylor took over 200 pictures and sent them to us. We will cherish these pics forever. We lived in Florida for almost 20 years and this was our first time swimming with the manatees. Don’t wait to try this.

What an incredible experience from start to finish! It all began with Captain Evan and our guide Taylor, whose kindness and deep knowledge made the day unforgettable. They went above and beyond to find a manatee for us to swim with. Taylor even carried my 7-year-old daughter on her back during part of the swim to help comfort her — and managed to keep a baby manatee nearby for over an hour! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

This was a 10/10 experience- we got to swim with 3 different manatees, one pair was a mom and pup! The crew was amazing as well, very informative and made it a great time - we definitely want to come back whenever we are back down here! Stop scrolling & book with them! ALSO - photos are great too & they were delivered within like an hour after finishing the tour.

5/5 Stars - An Unforgettable Experience with Captain Evan and Guide Sam! We had an incredible time on our manatee snorkeling tour with Nature's Discovery! From start to finish, the experience was smooth, educational, and truly memorable. Captain Evan was knowledgeable and professional, making us feel safe and welcome from the moment we stepped on the boat. He knew exactly where to take us for the best chance of seeing manatees in their natural habitat, and his calm demeanor really set the tone for a relaxed adventure. Our guide Sam was equally fantastic--friendly, patient, and passionate about the wildlife. He provided clear instructions and made sure everyone was comfortable in the water, especially those of us who were a little nervous at first. Sam pointed out interesting facts about the manatees and the ecosystem, and his respect for the animals was evident throughout the tour. We were lucky to have several close encounters with manatees, and floating alongside such gentle giants was absolutely magical. The equipment was clean and well-maintained, and the group size was small enough to make it feel personal. Highly recommend this tour if you're looking for a genuine, respectful, and awe-inspiring way to experience Florida's wildlife. Huge thanks to Evan and Sam for making the day so special--we'll be talking about this for a long time!

Evan, Jake and Tay were great! Even with it being summer Evan spotted a mantee in about 10 mins and then with Tay and Jake’s help we were soon in the water and up close with two manatees. You can not really understand the size of them until you’re in with them. Jake and Tay kept us following and safe. We had some great photos that were included and even my 5 and 7 year old got in and had a go at snorkelling and swimming. Highly recommend, thanks guys

Very personal tour, they put real effort in spotting manatees, which are not that numerous in summer, to make sure you have a great experience. Also you get to make choices what you want to see (chrytal clear springs, more manatees). The tour guide Amanda and her captain are easygoing folks you’ll feel comfortable with right away.

John, our boat captain, and Karizma, our hostess, in water guide, and chauffeur, were fantastic! We booked the 10:30 trip and left at 10:29 for the short trip to the docks. Although the trip could have up to 12 ppl, we had a private trip. Quite impressed that they still ran the trip with just the 2 of us. Anyway, once at the docks, we met up with John who took us to the boat and got us set up with masks, a safety briefing, and then we headed out in search of the manatees. Within a short time, we found other boats with large groups (glad we were not with them - too many people) in the water. We got in line and another boat with a "smaller group" was kind enough to let us join their group. Once we could move in to see the manatees, Karizma, was amazing. She reminded us what we needed to do, guided us toward the manatees, and took great shots while we relaxed and followed the manatees. In fact, she did way more than the other group's guide did for them and she helped their group too! We were in the water for about 45 minutes and really enjoyed our time. I am not sure where else you can get SO close to a creature in their natural habitat! What an experience! Karizma took great photos and she emailed them to us before we even got changed and left the building. Even better, the photos were included in their very reasonable price! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! My husband and I highly recommend Nature's Discovery

The guys we were with, they were really great fun, a lot was told, and were very excited! (John and Jaden) We really haven't seen many of the Manatees, because the water just gets murky. So if you're going, book an early time! Especially with these guys!

This is why we chose this outfit for our Mantee discovery adventure!!!.... Extremely family friendly ! Everyone was so nice !! Our captain Evan and lead swimmer Sam were amazing! They were very professional and all at the same time genuinely sweeter than you can ask for. Our family was looking for: Family friendly Great reviews Truly Free Photos Fair Price Captain Evan was very knowledgeable and was extremely resourceful, utilizing other captains to crowd source information about where the manatees are located. Sam was amazing as the lead swimmer and was constantly helping our group to track them. She also was great at taking pictures if you asked at anytime as she has a waterproof gopro. We will definitely be back!! Best time to come is when the water in the Gulf of America is colder than 65 since this bay has springs at 72 degrees year round. We are here in July and we still had great viewings!! This experience was exactly what we were hoping for and highly recommend other families that prefer small intimate groups. They limit their groups to 6 people and truly only had 2 other people with us! Thank you again guys!!! Can't wait to come back with more family and hopefully in the winter!! All the best!! And hope everyone gets to have the same experience we did!!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 An Unforgettable Manatee Adventure with the Best Team! My girlfriend and I had the absolute pleasure of joining Nature Discovery’s Manatee Tour, and it was truly one of the most memorable experiences we’ve ever had together. From the moment we arrived, Captain John and our guide Jaden made us feel welcome, safe, and genuinely excited for what was to come. Captain John was calm, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area and the manatees. His passion for conservation and respect for wildlife set the tone for an ethical and awe-inspiring encounter. Jaden was equally fantastic—friendly, upbeat, and full of insight. He made sure everyone felt comfortable, especially those of us who were a little nervous getting in the water. His guidance and energy really helped us relax and be present for the magic of the moment. Together, they helped us have several close, respectful encounters with these gentle giants—watching them move gracefully through the water beside us was absolutely surreal. My girlfriend and I both left feeling connected, inspired, and so grateful for the experience. If you’re considering this tour—stop thinking and just book it. Captain John and Jaden go above and beyond. This was a once-in-a-lifetime memory for both of us, and we’ll be recommending it to everyone we know. Thank you both for making it so special!

They helped us respectfully observe the manatees while still providing an up close and personal experience with them They enthusiastically shared fun facts along our boat ride and answered all of our questions. Captain John and Jaden were amazing! They worked hard but respectfully to find where the manatees were during our summer break. Their knowledge of the local wildlife is second to none, and our daughter really enjoyed learning about all the different types of birds, fish and other animals while we were boating around Kings Bay. Jaden and John were great at spotting the local manatees and helped our family get into the water quietly and we were able to see a mother and her calf from a respectful distance! Excellent tour! We had a great experience with the manatees and staff, Captain John and guide Karisma (sp?). Both crew were very knowledgeable and personable. We could not ask for better crew on our tour. They helped us grow in our limited knowledge of the manatees and of their environment and habits. We even learned a couple good manatee spotting tips!My wife booked the first tour time due to the mid-June heat wave and online recommendations. As it turned out, we were the only people on that tour. That made it a unique and enjoyable experience for us. Although we were the only ones on this tour, a few other boats had made it out before us. After several minutes looking for "our own" manatee, we eventually joined up with another group that was already following a male and female. The experience with the manatees was great! We did have some visibility issues with low tide and joining the larger group, which kicked up some silt to make the water murky. There was about 2 foot visibility underwater. That created the conditions for several near misses and frequent bumps by the gentle creatures. One annoying situation we experienced, as frequent sealife adventurers, was disrespect for the simply tour rules. The other group had a young boy, maybe 7-9 yrs old, who continually "rode" on top of, or laided sideways across, one manatee, making access difficult given the low visibility. Everybody basically had to get under the boy to see anything. It was rude of the boy, his parents, and the other company's guide to allow this. You are NOT supposed to touch the animals.Upon our return to our boat, our guide apologized for THE OTHER TOUR GUIDE not enforcing the rules. We appreciated that but wish the other tour was more respectful. We would definitely recommend this tour and our great crew!

We had the best time on our ecotour. We had a great view of a mom and calf and then were even more surprised to follow a group of 4 manatees for a while! We had good visability with these and got some great pictures. Our guide Captain John was so kind and very knowledgeable of everything with the bay ecosystem, history and manatees. We learned a lot. Karizma met us first thing this morning with a big smile and got us fitted for our wet suits and drove us to meet up with our Captain Dylan he made us feel welcome and was very professional and worked very hard to make sure our manatee snorkeling experience was as full as it could be in the time that we had. Great experience swimming with the manatees. The guide and captain showed us the area looking for manatees until we found a large herd. It was 32oF but once we got in the water 72oF it was fine. We spent close to an hour in the water. They gave us hot chocolate (yummy!) when we got out of the water. Bring dry clothes to change immediately when you get out of the water. The photos they offer are awesome.

We had the most incredible experience on our small group manatee tour with Nature’s Discovery in May 2025. From start to finish, everything was very well organised and educational. Our guide, Amanda, was absolutely lovely — warm, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable about manatees and the local ecosystem. She shared fascinating facts throughout the tour, which made the whole experience even more meaningful.Unlike other tours we saw that had more than 10 people crowded together, our group was small, which made the encounter feel much more personal and respectful of the wildlife. We were fortunate to see several manatees, including a playful mother and calf that stayed near us for quite a while. We also spotted an alligator and some ospreys, which was an unexpected treat and added to the sense of adventure.Highly recommend Nature’s Discovery if you’re looking for a responsible, enriching, and unforgettable wildlife encounter!

We had a brilliant memorable tour experience! As first time manatee swimmers we were a little nervous. Amanda and the captain instantly made us feel relaxed and safe, explaining in detail about the tour and the manatees answering any questions we had and putting us at ease. Amanda and the captain were fantastic, their knowledge and friendliness made our experience enjoyable. Amanda took some great photos which we will enjoy looking back on for time to come. We were lucky enough to swim along with a manatee and its baby which was very special. Thank you Amanda and captain (apologies we do not remember your name) for being great tour guides and giving us an unforgettable experience ! Jack and Hannah ❤️😁

We had a great time on our boat trip to see the manatees. The trip was run very smoothly and professionally from start to finish. We never felt rushed or hurried along.Swimming with the manatees is an experience I won't forget. They are such lovely gentle creatures and being so close to them was a treat. After the manatee encounter we had a boat trip and saw alligators, turtles and a pair of nesting osprey. Amanda and Evan were very knowledgeable on manatees, other wildlife, and the history of bay. This was absolutely the highlight of our family vacation!!! There were many other companies that we could’ve chosen to do the manatee tour, but this was the best one! From the first phone call to reserve our reservation, they were professional, kind.. just awesome! Then we got there and checked in.. again super amazing! This was our first snorkeling tour. Mandy helped us with wetsuits, what to expect, all of it! Then we got to the boat, and Evan, our captain was also amazing! They explained everything and made us feel comfortable. They made sure we saw manatees up close, even got to see dolphins! Then we got pics to take home!!! What a treat!!! Don’t even question what company to use when taking manatee tours.. just use Nature’s Discovery!!!! Support a local business, you won’t regret it!!!!!! Thanks again Evan and Mandy! Looking forward to doing it again with them on our next Florida trip!!!!

We have always loved manatees so we were SO EXCITED to swim with them in Crystal River! First of all, it turns out that we swim in King's Bay and manatees can be anywhere in the 600acre bay so don't always expect to swim in clear water. Luckily we had some great up-close encounters and everybody and everything about the company was top-notch. From answering my 100 questions over the phone, the checking in process and brief shuttle ride, and then our excellent tour with Lynn and Jake. I could not recommend this experience enough!!!!

We went with Mandy and Evan and they were amazing!!! They deserve the five stars for going above and beyond to make sure we not only saw manatees but were comfortable as first time snorkelers. The manatees are so cute and friendly and we hope to do this again. And the scalloping maybe! 10/10
